Terry the Radio Jingle Collector

I have been a collector of Radio jingles for well over 30 years.

Why on earth would anybody want to collect jingles I hear you ask?.... I don't really know, is the reply! .....but I know that when I heard my first radio jingle, almost 35 years ago, I stopped in my tracks and just had to know more about them. So what is a Jingle?

A Jingle is a musical ident designed to get a message across. They are used in Radio and TV and you will hear one within 20 seconds of this page loading.

What do Jingles do?

The answer is quite simple really. All over the world there are 1000's of Radio signals in the air for listeners to choose from. If you run a Radio Station you need to be certain that your sound hits the right market and keeps your station at the top. No matter how great your station maybe it wont be any good if your listener's can't distinguish you from the competition, or at least remember your station's name.

For this reason the effective use of good quality jingles helps to identify your station. The musical style and attitude of the jingles will tell its listeners what they can expect from the station. If a jingle is programmed well and used effectively it can identify the station and smooth the running of musical presentation perfectly.

One reason for this is that a musical message is often more memorable than a spoken one and since the stations aim is to get the audience to remember its name it makes sense to let jingles convey that information in a catchy or attention-getting musical way.

Used well jingles can bridge tempo changes, introduce news and traffic reports and punctuate promotions, in addition to adding excitement to special features. Whatever, jingles are fun and an essential part of radio.
